How to Add Mouse Tracking to Your Website

You might think you have the best website ever.

But have you ever wondered if your customers feel the same way?

After all, not everyone might see or understand your website in the same way you do.

Mouse Tracking can help you understand exactly how your customers are interacting with your website.

It can also shine a light on parts of your website that might be confusing your customers and costing you sales revenue.

What is Mouse Tracking?

Mouse Tracking refers to the practice of tracking the mouse movements of website visitors. Allowing to see how they moved their mouse, what elements they hovered over, highlighted or clicked on.

This tracking can be used to understand how your customers view your website. For example, mouse tracking can let you know if the checkout button on your website is easy to find.

Mouse tracking is generally used to improve the user interface and user experience on a website to prevent high bounce rates of customers.

After all, a high bounce rate (with customers getting frustrated and leaving your website) can result in massive losses of revenue.

How to Add Mouse Tracking to Your Website

The great thing about mouse tracking is that it is incredibly simple to implement.

You do not need to survey customers, record videos or use complicated software.

In fact, mouse tracking can be enabled for ALL of your website visitors by adding one simple code snippet on your website.

While there are multiple mouse tracking tools out there, we will teach you how to add mouse tracking to your website FOR FREE using Moment.

Creating a Free Moment Account

Moment is a free and powerful customer tool that automatically implements Mouse Tracking features on your website.

It is also free and really easy to install.

First, you’ll need to create a free Moment account using your email.

If you do not want to use Moment’s live chat, do not worry. You can turn this feature off later by going to Team Settings > Installation.

Once you’ve finished the registration process, you will get your Moment Code Snippet.

Copy-paste this snippet and add it to the <head> tag of your website. The same place where you’d put the code snippet for Google Analytics and such.

If you do not know how to do this, just copy-paste the snippet and ask your webmaster to add it to your website.

Once the snippet is added to your website, you will start tracking the mouse movement and actions of every user on your site.

Reviewing Mouse Tracking Recordings

Now that Moment is running on your website and collecting Mouse Tracking data, it’s time to take a look at what your customers did.

First, login to your Moment dashboard. Go to Users and select All Users (or a filtered view if you’ve created one before).

Click on any of the users you’d like to view mouse tracking for. This will open their user panel.

In the user panel, choose a date range and click on the “Play Video of This Activity Range” button. This will open a new tab where you can play a video of the user’s sessions.

Each session playback will show you the mouse movement of the users and how they interacted with each element on the site.

On the left sidebar, you can browse through specific sessions for users with multiple recordings.

Under the playback video, you can rewind, fast forward, skip inactivity and choose other playback features.

Closing Thoughts

You know now how to collect, store and review Mouse Tracking sessions for every visitor on your website.
